Curator’s Comment:
This subject matter is ideally suited for your photorealistic style. I immediately thought of Janet Fish when I saw your vibrant reflective glass, but I would venture to say your work has a denser saturation, and opacity. Maybe this is due to the handling of the oil media. The larger than life scale no doubt imparts more significance to the still life objects, but I still perceive preciousness from the knobby decanter and etched floral patterns. The treasured quality is derived from the fragility of the glass, but also from the red violets and jewel like pthalo hues. I also really enjoy the close cropping and slight aerial perspective to the piece. Your painting entitled Delft Blue interestingly approaches the glasses from a slightly lower level, with startling reflections of what the viewer understands to be surrounding architecture. I like that the landscape isn’t repeated in the background, as it takes a minute to get our visual bearings despite the extreme realism. The colors in this piece particularly come across as hyper-real as the saturation of the complementary blues and orange intensity each other in the dream like setting. The slight slanting of the ground also prevents a completely solid foundation, or any static interpretation of space. It’s as if you’re asking the viewer to look past the subject and experience pure color and reflected light.
