Event Description

International Deadline: June 29, 2014 - Mpls Photo Center announces a call for entry for the upcoming juried exhibition, "Black & White". Open to photographers worldwide. All Black and White imagery is eligible for submission. This includes alternative process, traditional, digital, and toned black and white images. All subjects are welcome.

Black and White photography is a stern mistress. No dazzling color behind which to hide. While color is of course wonderful, B&W more grasps the moment by the throat and better distills the essentials in the act of communication. I look forward to seeing rigorously considered and heartfelt artistic expressions, that embody the notion that while the photograph is indeed an object of art, it is really there to deliver a message from human to human. When students ask me how to get a show in a gallery, I always reply, "First, get a something out there worth sharing as a 'story' to be told through your art." Yes, everything out there has been photographed to death - but not by You. Try to show us through your art, something only you have to say.

First Place - $400
Second Place - $300
Third Place - $200
Three Honorable Mentions.

Prizes and Awards include a free full-color Exhibition Book All images.

JUROR - Paul Berlanga
Paul Berlanga studied humanities at the University of Illinois in the 1970s. Berlanga then studied drawing and painting at the American Academy of Art. He then spent the better part of two decades dealing in used and rare books, while pursuing his art.

In 1997, Berlanga became Director of the Stephen Daiter Gallery, Chicago. The gallery offers a range of work but specializes in vintage photographs, with an emphasis on modernist experimental and social documentary subject matter. As director he chose artists to represent and curated exhibitions. He has written and edited texts for gallery catalogues and related publications, his favorite of which was the 2008 PowerHouse monograph Wayne Miller Photographs 1942-1958. Berlanga subsequently lectured at the Tweed Museum, in Duluth with Miller’s career as his subject.

All images selected by juror will be exhibited throughout the Mpls Photo Center Galleries and published in a full-color Exhibit Book for purchase.
